The Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles (AAGLA), a non-profit organization representing rental housing providers and property managers, has filed a lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles for its recently passed renter protection ordinances. The suit, filed in California’s Superior Court, seeks to overturn tenant protections that include prohibiting evictions of tenants who owe less than a certain amount of rent.

“These new ordinances are clearly illegal under state law,” said AAGLA Board President Cheryl Turner. “Rental units such as newer construction, single family homes and condominiums are exempted from price controls such as rent stabilization ordinances. The City has clearly created a scenario where renters, not the property owners, can effectively establish the amount of rent they wish to pay.”

Other tenant protections in LA’s new ordinances include forcing landlords to provide relocation assistance to tenants who are facing steep rent hikes and substantial penalties for landlords if a rent increase exceeds a specific percentage.
