Controversial Saratoga Housing Project Breaks Ground

A project in an affluent area, eased by the California state housing mandate, has broken ground in Saratoga, CA. Quito Village, a mixed-use development on Cox Avenue is slated to have 17 buildings featuring 90 housing units and 5,000 square feet of commercial space. About 10% of the Dahlin Group-designed townhomes would be reserved for very low-income households.

According to The Mercury News, Pulte Homes purchased most of the property from Sand Hill Property Company last year for $54 million after Sand Hill used a California law to streamline development in cities that did not meet state housing goals. The project has seen pushback from residents who want to retain Saratoga’s “small-town” feel.

The site, which was formerly a shopping center, will include a retail building that is expected to open in May with Starbucks and Saratoga Vision Center as tenants. Pulte Homes says the townhomes will include both rental units and purchasable units which go on sale in June.
